What is Hair Transplantation?

Hair Transplantation is, perhaps, the most successful method of re-growing hair, these days. It is a surgical process—a technique of removing hair follicles from one part of the body where hair growth is considered good (referred to as the ‘donor site’) and embedding them on the bald or balding area of the body (referred to as the ‘recipient site’). This is primarily used to treat ‘male pattern baldness’ or androgenetic alopecia. This is a minimally invasive procedure where Hair Transplant Specialists select ‘grafts’ containing hair follicles from areas that are genetically resistant to hair fall and transplant them to the scalp or any specific balding area. Restoring eyelashes, eyebrows, facial hair (beard and mustache), chest hair and more and filling in scars caused by accidents or surgery are some other problems addressed effectively by Hair Transplantation.

What are the causes of Hair Loss or Hair Fall?

Some of the main causes of Hair loss in Men are as follows:

 Heredity can Trigger Hair Loss:

One of the most common causes of hair loss in men is hereditary. Male hair starts thinning out gradually with age. This is generally because of the genetic build that one gets from his parents. Scientific studies believe that this process is influenced by the sensitivity of your genes to a hormone called DTH, which makes your hair follicles shrink. This results in finer, thinner and shorter hair structure. Over time, the area tends towards baldness.

Infections are a Common Cause of Hair Loss:

One of the most common causes for mild to severe loss of hair in men (and women) are scalp infections like ringworm (a fungal infection, ‘tinea capitis’), Folliculitis (hair follicles suffer from inflammation), Seborrheic Dermatitis (skin becomes scaly along with other conditions), Piedra (fungal infection on hair fibres) and more.

Medical Conditions (or Diseases) Responsible for Hair Loss:

Medical conditions such as Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Anaemia are some of the top reasons for hair loss. Hair loss related to an autoimmune condition known as ‘alopecia areata’ results in creating bald patches on the head. This is common in women too.

Hair Loss Due to Side Effects:

Hair loss due to side effects of medicines or treatments is a shared concern by many. Serious treatments like Chemotherapy affects hair loss a lot. Certain classes of medication cause hair loss as well, like antidepressants, blood thinners and more. This may affect women as well.

Some Other Causes of Hair Loss (affect both, men and women):

  • Stress, both physical and mental
  • Physical or Mental Trauma
  • An overdose of Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B deficiency
  • Iron deficiency
  • Protein deficiency
  • Dietary habits that result in insufficient intake of necessary nutrients
  • Too much styling on hair (usage of harsh chemicals and sprays often)
  • Keeping the same hairstyles like tight ponytails or bun for a prolonged period of time
  • Trichotillomania—a condition where one has the habit of pulling out one’s hair
  • Anabolic steroids—commonly used in bodybuilding regimes

Some of the main causes of Hair loss in Women are as follows:

Along with some of the causes mentioned above that may affect women as well, like over-styling, stagnant hairstyles for years, dietary habits, over-absorption of Vitamin A, deficiency of Vitamin B, infections, side effects of medicines and more, there are some vital causes of female hair loss that are quite specific in nature.

Heredity Causes Hair Loss:

Similar to how genes can influence male-pattern baldness in men, genes also may cause female- pattern baldness. It usually occurs in like a slow process with age and may be observed in receding hairline and thinning of hair on the scalp. It is known as androgenetic alopecia and is especially noticeable in postmenopausal women. This type of hair loss affects about two-thirds of the women in the world.

Mental Stress:

High mental stress levels in women often result in extreme hair loss and irregularity in mensural cycles. ASD or Acute Stress Disorder, Anxiety Disorder and Sleeping Disorder are also among the top causes of hair loss that have their roots in mental stress.

Hormone Imbalances:

Hormones play a very important role in both men and women. However, hormone imbalances affecting hair loss is more common among women. A medical condition known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) can cause male-pattern hair loss and unwanted growth of body hair in females. Other conditions such as Pregnancy, Menopause and Underactive Thyroid are also responsible for the same.

Bamboo Hair:

It is common for women to sport long hair. However, long hair may show signs of damage when affected with a condition called Bamboo hair (trichorrhexis invaginata) where the hair strands develop small bumps that resemble a bamboo stalk. It makes hair fragile (breaks easily), slows down hair growth, hair lacks luster and shine and hair appears knotty. This may also cause loss of eyebrows and eyelashes. It is a genetic condition.

Gluten Intolerance:

Mild to intense gluten intolerance causes considerable hair loss. Indian diet is quite heavy on gluten products. Unawareness of being intolerant causes a considerable amount of hair loss and may cause frustration. Lack of awareness makes it remain undiagnosed in most cases. Gluten products include wheat and related grains like barley and rye. The extreme manifestation is Celiac disease.

Extreme Weight Loss:

Sudden and dramatic weight loss can cause the body to be in a state of shock by the fluctuation of the BMI or Body Mass Index. This is understood as ‘physical stress’ by the human body which in turn signals the hair follicles to hibernate or become inactive. It is not a permanent loss and hair can regrow over a period. However, the results vary from person to person based on their health condition and age.

Dieting gone wrong may affect the body deeply. It may deprive you of ingesting essential and natural nutrients and minerals. The result is often deficiencies and other health-related issues that trigger hair loss.

Nevertheless, with the advancement of modern science, hair transplant has succeeded in providing a solution for hair loss. Be it your hair on the head, facial hair or eyebrows that you wish to improve, hair transplant is your one, permanent solution.

The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’
